In short

HumFinder has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies. It uses your microphone only after you press a button. Recordings are not saved.

Who runs HumFinder

HumFinder is run by Humfinder. Contact us at hello@humfinder.com.

When you listen for a song

Your browser records up to twelve seconds of sound and turns it into a fingerprint on your device. Only the encrypted fingerprint is sent to our server. The recording never leaves your device.

When you hum

Your browser normally reads the tune on your device and sends only that, encrypted. It downloads a small model the first time to do this. If your browser can't run it, the recording is sent to our server, encrypted, kept in memory just long enough to read the tune, up to about a minute when the server is busy, and then discarded. It is not written to disk or kept.

What we do store

If you press "That's my song" or "None of these", we store your answer, the song and the time, so results can improve. It is not linked to you.

Your IP address is held in memory for up to a minute to limit abuse. Our hosting and network providers may also keep ordinary technical logs, which can include IP addresses.

If you add music

If you have an invite, we store the name on your invite, the fingerprints and melody data from each song, its file details, and your confirmation that you have the rights. The uploaded audio is deleted once processing ends.

Other companies

Our server is hosted by Hetzner.

If you press Play on a song we don't host, your browser may load a preview directly from Apple, which sees your IP address. Links to YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music take you to those services, under their own privacy policies.

Your choices

You can use HumFinder without giving a name or email. You can block the microphone in your browser at any time. For any privacy question or request, write to hello@humfinder.com. HumFinder is not directed at children under 13.
