Start by humming it

You don't need the words or a good singing voice. Press Hum a tune on HumFinder and hum the part you remember for about ten seconds. It compares the ups and downs of the melody, so being off-key is fine. Then play the closest matches to see if one is your song.

Pick the part you know best

The chorus is usually the easiest, because it repeats and it's what most people remember. If one part doesn't work, try another, and hum for longer.

What is the song that goes like this?

If a search doesn't find it, ask people. On r/NameThatSong and r/tipofmytongue on Reddit, you can post a short recording of yourself humming, along with anything you remember: where you heard it, roughly when, and whether the singer was a man or a woman.

Write down what you remember

Small details narrow it down quickly: a few words, the language, the decade, the kind of music, or a film, game or shop where you heard it. Search for those together.

If HumFinder doesn't find it

HumFinder only knows the songs in its catalogue, which doesn't yet include most popular music. So a miss doesn't mean you hummed it badly. The Google app can search by humming too, and it covers many more popular songs.
